Introduction

This guide will help you get Australian digital TV working on your MythTV box. This guide assumes you already have a MythTV box up and running.

Configuring MythTV

Here we are assuming you have already done the basic MythTV installation. You can use something like MythDora to get you to this stage quickly.

Before continuing make sure the backend is stopped.

/etc/init.d/mythbackend stop

As root, load up the 'mythtvsetup' program. Select option '2. Capture Cards' and then select 'New capture Card'.

Now change the card type to read 'DVB DTV capture card (v3.x)' and set the 'DVB Card Number' to 0. You should have something like this:

mythtv-dvb-1.jpg

If you have more than one capture card you can now configure these cards as well. The settings are the same as above except you need to increment the 'DVB Card Number' value by 1 for each card you add.

Now head back to the main MythTV setup screen and select '3. Video Sources' and then select 'New video source'.

Configure this screen to look like this:

mythtv-dvb-2.jpg

You can also turn on the 'Perform EIT Scan' option, but it is not always reliable.

Do the same thing as above for the any other DVB cards you have.

Now head back to the main MythTV setup screen and select '4. Input Connections'. You will likely get a error message about the channel list not being retrievable while doing this. This can be ignored.

Now select the first DVB option on the list. On this new screen change the 'Video source' to FTA-Oz and then select the 'Scan for channels' option. Now make sure that 'Scan Type' is set to 'Full Scan' and 'Country' is set to 'Australia' and select the Next option. MythTV should now scan for channels.

Now head back to the main MythTV setup screen and select '5. Channel Editor'. You should see a list of channels which were just scanned.

You can remove channels which you will not be using (such as the tv guide channels). To do this select the channel and delete the channel number. This causes MythTV to ignore the channel completely.

Finally we need to set the XMLTV IDs so MythTV known which tv guide data belongs to which channel. To do this select the channel you which to have tv guide data, untick the 'Use on air guide' option and add the appropriate guide option to the XMLID TV section from the list below. You will need to do this for every channel you wish to have a TV guide for.

Here is (I hope) a complete list of XMLTV IDs for FTA stations available in Australia. You add the first part (eg 'ABC-Vic' for ABC in Victoria) to the 'XMLTV ID' option. By using these XMLTV IDs it will be easier for you to use the OzTivo TV Guide data with MythTV.

Conclusion

MythTV should now have all the Australian channels in your area listed and ready to function. You can now follow the Australian TV Guide Data for MythTV guide to get your tv guide listing.

Can MythTV be set up without installing a capture card to simply view the electronic program guide?

You need to find an xmltv grabber for Australia.

I've had success with shepherd. There's a reasonably straightforward instruction page for downloading and installing it at http://svn.whuffy.com/wiki.

Shepherd downloads listings from the net and uses xmltv to load them up into mythtv. The alternative to using xmltv is to set your cards to use EPG (electronic program guide) data, which is sent along with the digital signal, but I haven't had any listings on 9 or sbs for ages.

There are some additional packages you need to install.

I'm not sure how you do it on Mythbuntu, but in Ubuntu you use synaptic package manager and search for xmltv.

Same problem here.

Im using Mythbuntu 9.04.

I tried to follow your instructions, but my Myth Video Source setup screen doesnt have an option for XMLTV Listings.

All it has is “Listings Grabber” and my options in the dropdown box are “No Grabber”, “North American (SchedulesDirect.org) (Internal)” and “Transmitted Guide Only”.

Any suggestions?
